The first picture is of the sunken road, also known as Bloody Lane, on September 17, 1862 after the Battle of Antietam (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg) compared to the present day view. It was very moving to stand on the same ground where so much bloodshed and sacrifice had taken place that many years ago.
